Since their formation in 1991, Fear Factory has quickly established itself to be one of the most original band in the heavy metal genre. In 1992, vocalist Burton C. Bell, guitarist/bassist Dino Cazares and drummer Raymond Herrera recorded their debut LP on Roadrunner Records entitled Soul Of A New Machine. The album was like no other in the metal community, in parts it has a certain tranquility, while in others it was an all out eardrum destroyer. It is very evident that the band's early influences were death and industrial metal, all seventeen tracks contain the growly death metal vocals and riffs and the industrial sampling.

Before embarking on a tour to promote Soul Of A New Machine, Fear Factory hired bassist Andrew Shives to relieve Dino Cazares of having to perform both bass and guitar duties on tour. In 1993, after having done some brief touring, Fear Factory reentered studios and, with the help of members of Front Line Assembly, remixed four songs off of their debut album into a more techno oriented sound, the end result became a six track EP entitled Fear Is The Mindkiller. Soon afterwards, Fear Factory hired the full-time touring services of keyboardists Reynor Diego and Rhys Fulber (of Front Line Assembly) to add to their live sound.

In 1994, after some more touring, Andrew Shives was fired and replaced with Belgian axe-man Christian Olde Wolbers. In October of that year, the band entered Bearsville Studios in Bearsville, New York to record their follow-up LP Demanufacture. The album sounded a bit different from their debut, vocally Burton had incorporated more variation and there was a lot more sampling done. Since it's release in 1995, Demanufacture has quickly become one of the all-time best selling records for Roadrunner. After the band gets everything in order, they plan to record a follow-up remix EP to the album to Demanufacture along the lines of Fear Is The Mindkiller to be released in 1997.
